Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple hosts an annual bon-odori dance for four days between late July and early August. Each year the event attracts visitors from the neighborhood, across the country, and even outside Japan. These visitors are invited to form a circle around the scaffold set up in the temple grounds—it doubles as a bandstand where taiko drums are performed live—and dance to a medley of songs including “Tsukiji Ondo.” During certain times participants are free to dance in any costume of their choice, and watch a gallant performance by the percussion ensemble Oedo Sukeroku Taiko. Another highlight is the stalls run by the restaurants from in and around the Tsukiji Outer Market. Enjoy both delicious Tsukiji cuisine and Japan’s traditional bon celebration.
The main hall, the three gates, and the stone wall were designated in 2014 as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
