Nihonbashi Ebisu-ko Bettara-ichi Pickle Fair 日本橋恵比寿講べったら市

Takarada Ebisu Shrine, 3-10 Nihonbashi-honcho, Chuo City, Tokyo
2023-10-19 - 2023-10-20

Note: The 2023 installment of this event has already taken place.

The Nihonbashi Pickle Fair features stalls selling bettara-zuke, a type of sweet pickled daikon radish. The food stalls are centered around Takarada Ebisu Shrine but stretch throughout the Horidomecho, Nihonbashi Honmachi Sanchome, and Odenmacho neighborhoods.

The festival's origins date back to the Edo period. October 20 was Ebisu-ko, a day when merchants and their loved ones would celebrate Ebisu, the folkloric god of wealth. On October 19, in preparation for the next day, vendors would gather in front of Takarada Ebisu Shrine and sell items such as fish, vegetables and household shrines. It's said that this was the origin of today's pickle market.

Around 400 to 500 stalls set up shop in the Odenmacho area. The neighborhood is lively until late at night, with a mix of people returning home from work and tourists enjoying the festive atmosphere.
