Rediscovering Tokyo via history and culture

The lifestyle and streetscape of Tokyo’s shitamachi area that flourished with creative merchants and artisans in premodern Tokyo, popular product packaging from the Showa period (1926–89), and advertisements from the past decades—get up close with history and culture, and discover the hints of nostalgia alive in Tokyo.

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum

Situated in Koganei Park renowned for the view of cherry blossoms in spring, the vast museum is divided into west, center, and east zones lined with 30 restored buildings from the Edo (1603–1868) to early Showa (1926–89) periods. The East Zone particularly evokes nostalgia with a streetscape from the lively shitamachi area. Visitors are welcome to enter the shops and bathhouse, and glimpse the lifestyle of Tokyoites around the turn of the 20th century.
